20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

This novel had a great story, but I read the unabridged version and it was a hard book, so it took me more than two months to finish it.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, by Jules Verne, 448 pages

Here is an exciting novel in which Professor Arronax, his servant Conseil, a Canadian whale hunter named Ned Land, and many other scientists set out on a ship in pursuit of something that Professor Arronax thinks to be a humongous narwhal.  The group find this creature, but the "narwhal" is faster.  Professor Arronax, Conseil, and Ned are thrown overboard, and they find out that "the narwhal" is actually a submarine commanded by a strange man named Captain Nemo.  The group is never to leave the Nautilus, the submarine, at Captain Nemo's orders.  Professor Arronax and Conseil really enjoy their stay on board the Nautilus since they were stupefied by the amazing wonders they could see from the Nautilus.  Captain Nemo even took the Nautilus to the South Pole!  However, Ned Land was not as pleased with the voyage as the group was totally cut off from humanity since that was exactly what Captain Nemo seemed to be fleeing from.  Nine months after boarding the Nautilus, Ned, Professor Arronax, and Conseil learn that this fantastic submarine is not just a tool used to understand and see science; it is used as a device of vengeance.  Captain Nemo was sinking British ships because he hated them for killing his family.  Ned, Professor Arronax, and Conseil are disgusted.  They want to escape from the Nautilus and stay rejoin humanity.  Will they succeed in escaping from the Nautilus or will their plans be discovered by Captain Nemo?
