On their way, Shasta and Bree meet a girl named Avaris and another talking horse named Hwin who are escaping to Narnia from slavery. On their way to Narnia, the group have to cross a city called Tashban. In the city, Shasta is mistaken to be Prince Corin who is the son of the son of the king of Archenland, the land between Narnia and Calormen. Shasta then switches out with the real Prince Corin and returns to the spot on the side of Tashban closer to Narnia where the group had decided to meet if seperated. Meanwhile, Avaris meets an old friend and discovers that to get to the correct side of Tashban, she has to go through a door in the garden of the king of Tashban's palace. While going through the palace, Avaris hears about an attack planned on Archenland and Narnia. Then, Shasta, Avaris, Bree and Hwin meet again and continue their journey, and decide to warn the Kings and Queens of Narnia and Archenland. Bree, Hwin and, Avaris stay in a hermit's place and Shasta warns the king of Archenland about the attack planned. Shasta has to warn Narnia and Archenland in time for these countries to not be defeated by Calormen.
